Vodafone Germany is set to begin rolling out mobile data speeds of up to 500Mbps to additional cities in the coming weeks, after debuting the high speed LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network in parts of Berlin and Dusseldorf in November last year. The service, which utilises tri-carrier aggregation (3C) technology in the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz frequency bands, will reach 15 cities by the summer. In September 2016 Vodafone introduced LTE mobile data speeds of up to 375Mbps in 22 cities, but the UK-owned company revealed at the CeBIT technology exposition that this total has now increased to 30.
In addition, Vodafone is planning to increase the maximum speeds offered over its fixed broadband cable network from 400Mbps (currently available to more than six million homes) to 500Mbps. Around 20% of households in its cable footprint will be able to access the new top speeds by the summer. The firm plans to hit the 1Gbps target in 2019 and has chosen Bavaria as its first ‘gigabit state’, where it will aim to provide the high speed broadband service to around 70% of the population. Vodafone has revealed that it is also running a gigabit pilot project in five cities this year.
